Nowhere Near Home

Wandering through a thunderstorm
Lost and alone
Heavy rain cuts into my face
Mingles with falling tears
Gusts of wind whirl around me
Disorientating and rough
I hear your voice above it all
“You will reach the sun”

Hopefully I stumble on
Another rain cloud bursts over me
Drowning and chilled
I drop to my knees
Shivering I raise my eyes
Shout to the dark and grey skies
“Why do I have to do this alone?”
Hunched low to the ground
Afraid I will miss your words
Around me angry thunders in my ears
I know I will not hear your voice again
The winds have already carried you away

So I stand
Stubborn and determined
Face the onslaught of bad weather
Lightening flashes
And I think I see your face in the blackened sky
Another step forward
Shaking and slow
My heart hammers in my chest
With the pain of missing you
It drives me to take another step
A step closer to you

I fall again
Swaying against the wind
I try to take courage
From the memory of your love
Do I hear your voice again?
A message through the downpour
“You will reach the sun”
I hear a mourning scream
It pierces the rumbling heavens
I realise it was my own
Feel a strength I hadn’t perceived

I stand again
Into the thunderstorm I start to walk
Closer to the home I once knew
Nearer to reaching you
Feeling your arms around me
A warm and sure embrace
I’ll carry on until I find you
My mother.
